Pele, Kinolau Wahine

Pele the Goddess of lava, volcanoes and fire embodies the deep, fiercely compassionate mother of creation. She is compassionate and loving, wrathful and forgiving, fierce and powerful beyond measure. All in a single breath of steam and smoke. She whispers and shouts messages to us, her children. “Malama ke Aina” Care for the Earth. She comes to us in many forms, urging us to heed her warnings. She takes every shape, animals and ghosts, a seductress, and the old woman walking on the roadside. She comes to us in dreams, and as a voice in the wind. Her lava paints pictures in earth and fire and steam. She is our Mother, our teacher and the fire that burns our funeral pyres.
